As part of the McMurdo Dry Valleys Long Term Ecological Research program, meteorological data are collected from various locations throughout the McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica. This data package contains 15-minute data from the Lake Hoare Meteorological Station (HOEM), located in Taylor Valley.
Meteorological data are collected year-round at each of MCM LTER stations. Data are manually downloaded from the meteorological stations during the austral summer. Raw 15 minute data (Level 0) is processed and provided as Level 1 data on the MCM LTER website. Field notes, sensor information, processing procedures, QA/QC, and metadata is provided in the Meteorological Post Processing Documentation and Task Lists for each field season at the following address: https://mcm.lternet.edu/meteorological-task-lists

During the fall of 2007, Karen Cozzetto, PhD student under McKnight at the University of Colorado Boulder, discovered an error in the pre-LTER data that originated from Gary Clow (pre 12/2/1993 12:00). These data included Air temp, relative humidity, wind speed and direction, and incoming SW rad. The time stamp for these data were shifted by several house in some cases. These data were fixed by Karen after consulting Clow. The new data were re-inserted into the database by Chris Gardner on 12/5/2007. In 2014, metadata was enhanced using the Drupal Ecological Information Management System (Inigo San Gil)

The Lake Hoare meteorology station was one of two meteorological stations operating on the floor of Taylor Valley at the start of the first McMurdo LTER field season (1993-1994). The McMurdo LTER team took control of this station during this season, and replaced it with a new station, located a few meters above the old site to avoid rising lake levels. The station was set up to sample sensors every 30 seconds and send summary statistics (for example, averages and maximums) to solid-state storage modules every 10 minutes between December 18, 1993 and January 16, 1994, every three hours between January 16, 1994 and November 18, 1994, every 20 minutes between November 18, 1994 and November 28, 1995, and every 15 minutes thereafter. This has resulted in approximately 20 values being recorded for final storage in every output interval. Primary measurements made on Lake Hoare meteorology station, instrumentation used, and time of initiation are shown in the following table. On Jan 26, 2002 a second datalogger and the TE525MM Tipping bucket rain gage was installed. The tipping bucket records the number of tips every 15 minutes. Three soil probes, 0, 5 and 10 cm below the surface were added to the datalogger on Dec 29, 2002. An ultraviolet radiometer (Kipp & Zonen CUV5 Total UV Radiometer) was installed at the Lake Hoare Met Station (HOEM) with an independent power supply and datalogger in 2015. The station is visited during the austral summer at the same time as the annual visit to HOEM. The sensor measures total UV irradiance, which is combined UVA and UVB irradiance. The values reported include minimum, maximum, and average UV in units of watts per meter squared (W m-2).
